Cheryl Whitworth (Owner/Director of Dancing Gems/Instructor)- has been dancing since the age of 3 and teaching at Asheville Dance Theater since 1994. She has studied and taught jazz, lyrical, ballet, hip hop and tap and is a certified member of Carolina Dance Masters and Dance Masters of America. Her work has received numerous "Best Choreography" "Most Entertaining" and "Judges Choice" awards as well as many Overall High Score Awards. Cheryl received her B.S. degree in Management from UNC-Asheville where she is currently the coach of the dance team. She is proud and honored to own the studio she has always called home.
Tonia Freeman (Director of Dancing Gems/Instructor)- has been tapping since the age of 5. She has taken the different styles from such tappers as Walter Fletcher, Savion Glover and Debbie Dee and fused them into a style that is all her own. Tonia is a certified member of Carolina Dance Masters and Dance Masters of America. Her work has received numerous "Best Choreography" "Most Entertaining" and "Judges Choice" awards as well as many Overall High Score Awards. She received her B.S. degree in Business Administration from UNC-Asheville and is proud to call Asheville Dance Theater home.
Dathan Brannon (Ballet Instructor for Dancing Gems)- A college graduate of NC School of the Arts, Dathan has trained at American Ballet Theater, Boston Ballet, Ballet Met and the Hungarian Dance Academy in Budepest. During his time in NY he was a member of Infinity Dance Theatre and performed with the American Ballet Theater for 3 consecutive seasons at the Metropolitan Opera House. He has been an instructor at Asheville Dance Theater since 2008.
Jaime Head (Instructor)- began studying dance at the age of 3 and has been part of the Asheville Dance Theater family most of her life. She has over 15 years teaching experience in such subjects as ballet, tap, jazz, lyrical and pointe. She is a certified member of Carolina Dance Masters and Dance Masters of America. Jaime has a Master's degree in Human Resource Development and works at UNC-Asheville.
Alena Johnson (Instructor) grew up dancing at Asheville Dance Theater. She received her BA in Dance from Elon University, where she studied Ballet, Modern, Jazz, Tap and choreography. Her primary area of training was in Modern, which holds a special place in her heart! She has been teaching at Asheville Dance Theater since 2002 and in 2015 won her first Choreography Award.
Aubry Good (Instructor/Office Admin)- has been dancing since the age of 4. She spent 15 of those years at Asheville Dance Theater. Aubry attended Arkansas Tech University. She has become certified as a fitness instructor through the YMCA and currently is an instructor at the YMCA at Reuter. Aubry has been teaching ballet and tap at Asheville Dance Theater since 2010 and office administrator since 2012.
Corine Rhom (Instructor) danced at Asheville Dance Theater for 15 years where she was a teachers assistant and substitute teacher for 2 years. She competed regionally and nationally for 7 of those years with the Dancing Gems and even performed with one of the Gems top 10 nationally ranked groups at Showstopper Nationals. Corine went to Appalachian State University, where she majored in Apparel Design and Merchandising. She currently works for Aeroflow Healthcare as the ecommerce product manager, and is very excited to be back with her ADT family!
Ellis Anne Rhom (Instructor) performed with the Dancing Gems for 8 years where she took classes from such choreographers as Stacey Tookey and Mia Michaels. She spent a total of 15 years at ADT before graduating from A.C Reynolds. Currently she is in her last year at AB Tech working towards her degree in Baking and Pastry Arts. She is looking forward to another year with her ADT family and can't wait to see what God has in store in the 2015-2016 year!!
Sydney Wells (Instructor) is a recent graduate of AC Reynolds and is starting her first year at AB Tech for Cosmetology and Business. She will also be attending the London School of Beauty and Make-up in London, England next summer. She plans to start her own business one day, and develop her own line of make-up. Sydney has been dancing at Asheville Dance Theater for 15 years and has been competing as a Dancing Gem for the past 8 years. Recently she competed with a group that was ranked Top Ten in the nation at Showstopper Nationals. She has taken class at Nuvo and Jump where she has taken class from many So You Think You Can Dance choreographers. She is excited to take this new journey with her ADT family.
Penney Russell (Office Manager) has been a part of our ADT family since 2002 when her family moved to Asheville from Houston, Texas and her daughter chose to continue her dance career at ADT. Penney received her B.S. degree in Accounting from Louisiana State University and enjoys working in the office and watching all the children grow through dance. She is happy to call Asheville Dance Theater home.
